For
the first time in Bell High history, an all-girls wrestling team is in the
making. Coach Pivarreal is responsible for training them for their season,
which is set to run from November to February.
Athletic director Mr. Santiago said, “This is actually the first year
the district has an all-girls wrestling team. This phenomenal idea is long
overdue.”
Title Nine
of the Educational Amendments ensures equality in activities 0lets students
participate in sports they enjoy regardless of gender. This has allowed
students like Jorge Fefe, (a Bell alumni), to participate in cheerleading, and
female students to play on the football team.
These girls
will be trained by the same coach as the boys, and will have to work just as
hard. “I think it’s fabulous that these girls are working so hard. This class
will put you in shape,” said P.E teacher and coach, Ms. Pickard.
Girls have been wrestling on the team for the last few years. Their
involvement has convinced Bell coaches to take on the responsibility of forming
and training a new team.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~I'm okay with how this
news story turned out. It could have used a few more facts but it gets the
point across. I had the most trouble conducting interviews, (Slightly
antisocial, yo!), and whenever I interviewed someone, they referred me to someone
else for more information. Neither Ms. Pickard or coach Pivarreal were
comfortable with giving any set dates for anything, so including those facts was out of the question. So..mediocre news story-ing! :D
